In the library

As a group we will explore these questions, using the books and information sheets in the library and the links above.

  • Who is a refugee?
  • Why do people flee their homes and become refugees? List as many reasons as you can find. http://www.abc.net.au/btn/story/s3571587.htm
  • What is the role of humanitarian agencies and how do they protect refugees?
  • What is life like in a refugee camp? Watch the video and discuss
  • What resources do refugees have to help them rebuild their lives?

Activity

Australia was once very isolated from the rest of the world. Modern technology and communications have changed this isolation, connecting us to the rest of the world.

This has led to Australia joining many global aid organisations such as United Nations, AusAID, Amnesty International, World Vision and Red Cross. Through these organisations we are involved in improving the living conditions of people throughout the world. This aid can improve basic human rights including health, education, water and food.

  • Using the links above and the Aid agencies worksheet, research three worthwhile aid projects.
  • Choose one of these three and create a movie or slideshow advertising the project to other children.
  • You will need to show your research and prepare a script.
  • Many programs and Web 2.0 tools can be used such as Smore, prezi, Keynote, Movie Maker, powerpoint, animoto, photopeach.
